Grass Options

Your home should sit upon something lush and green that will be the envy of the entire neighborhood. Grass not only makes the exterior of your home more attractive, but the vegetation is good for your community and will make your space look more natural. But you may be thinking, “Grass is grass,” right?

How many options could there be to choose from, and how might each affect your home?  With many years of experience, we will help guide you through the different options when it comes to grass.

Sod

If you don’t want to wait for your grass to grow before you can see it become lush and beautiful, you’ll want to opt for sod. Sod is an instantaneous addition that will have your lawn looking fresh and perfect almost as soon as it is installed. You’ll have to wait to walk on it or put up lawn ornaments and furniture, but it will give you that perfect-lawn look without any wait.

Sod is grass that has already been grown. Technically, it is a mixture of grass and a layer of soil woven together using the grass’s own roots or a netting material. You don’t have to install it at any specific time, just during the growing season. You will, however, want to make sure the weather isn’t too hot when it comes time to install.

Opting for sod will also help limit or eradicate weeds as sod is crafted without the seeds that develop into weeds in the first place. Once the roots extend into the soil in your yard, you’ll be able to enjoy your lawn—lawn ornaments, furniture, games, and all. Once installed, watering the sod is critical for it to take root and continue to grow.

Hydroseeding

Sod can be expensive, which is why a lot of people opt for hydroseeding instead. You only need a small team of people to help get your hydroseeded lawn started. You’ll use a mixture of seed, water, mulch, and fertilizer. Once laid down, your hydroseeded grass can get started sprouting. Growth should be apparent in a week or less. The quality of the grass that grows once it has begun sprouting will be better than many other options—as long as it is fed the proper nutrients to encourage thorough and proper growth.

Hydroseeding mixtures remain moist, so you don’t have to worry about the grass drying out right away. And you’ll be able to enjoy your lush, healthy lawn throughout the seasons. The efficiency of installation and the speed with which the method effectively grows grass will only make the outcome and your satisfaction that much better in the long run.

Traditional Grass Seed

The cost of traditional grass seed is significantly lower than sod and requires less effort to install. You can choose from a wide variety of grasses, such as Kentucky Blue or St. Augustine. Traditional seeding provides a unique look that will likely differ from your neighbors.

With traditional seeding, however, you do need to seed your lawn during a specific timeframe. It will also take a while for the grass to grow and mature. You’ll likely have to weed more often as well since traditional seed may carry weed seed with it.

Synthetic Grass

Synthetic grass is a good option for areas with high heat, heavy snow, or a poor growing season. Sometimes grass won’t grow efficiently depending on climate, so synthetic might be your best option if you desire a full and lush-looking lawn. The installation of artificial grass is easy and instant, but it can be pricey.

Irrigation System Benefits

To keep your grass hydrated and growing well, you will definitely want to consider investing in an irrigation system. Many lawns need an extra bit of tender loving care to remain healthy. Dry, brown lawns can be a real killer when it comes to the visual appeal of your home and neighborhood.

Irrigation systems help your lawn be lush and green—even during the peak of summer—it’s an investment worth looking into.
